Programs at Sophia’s House
Women’s Day Center
Open on Wednesdays and Thursdays from 9:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m., the Women’s Day Center at Sophia’s House (143 Blake Street, Lewiston) is here to support and empower women in the Lewiston-Auburn community and surrounding areas.
Administered by Sonia Turgeon, the Women’s Day Center will offer a communal space with activities, arts, crafts, music, classes, and discussion. (The entrance at 143 Blake Street is accessible on the parking lot side near Gather to Grow). These ongoing programs help in building resiliency and relationships.

The house also includes a permanent resident community. Residents and women in the long-term program share community spaces and regular meals. A calendar of monthly events at the Day Center can be found at Sophia’s House Facebook page.
Community Residential Services
The third-floor residential community provides long-term, supportive housing for women healing from addiction, trafficking, and incarceration. This structured environment includes private bedrooms, shared living spaces, and supportive routines that foster stability, recovery, and community life.
Permanent Rental Community
The second floor includes efficiency and one-bedroom apartments for permanent residents in a co-housing style environment. This model supports independence while fostering connection through shared spaces and opportunities for community involvement.
History of Sophia’s House
Sophia’s House is rooted in the decades-long work of the Center for Wisdom’s Women, a cherished community space that served women in Lewiston for more than twenty years. The Center became known for its grassroots, relationship-centered approach—offering dignity, encouragement, and community to women navigating trauma, poverty, and isolation.
In 2019, the mission expanded through the renovation of an early twentieth-century convent into Sophia’s House. This allowed the program to grow into a holistic, multi-layered model featuring daytime programming, long-term supportive housing, and permanent rental homes.
In 2025, Community Concepts Inc. (CCI) assumed stewardship of Sophia’s House to preserve and strengthen its mission. Under CCI, Sophia’s House remains committed to trauma-informed, gender-responsive care, honoring its history while expanding opportunities for women to heal, grow, and rebuild their lives.
